History
Five decades of cryopreservation and swine genetics from Eldora, Iowa.
1976
Founded in Eldora, Iowa
International Boar Semen was established in rural Hardin County, Iowa. At a time when boar semen cryopreservation was still considered experimental, IBS set out to prove that frozen genetics could work at scale, a conviction that has defined the company since.
Late 1970s
Proving the Impossible
While much of the AI industry dismissed frozen boar semen as impractical, IBS invested in perfecting cryopreservation. The company developed its own freezing and thawing techniques and achieved commercially viable conception rates.
1980s
Pioneer Cryobiology Era
IBS showed that commercial cryopreservation was not only viable but valuable, and built deep expertise in the science of freezing while others focused on fresh semen volume.
2008 to 2014
Industry Consolidation
The swine industry consolidated dramatically, and disease events including PRRS and PEDv reshaped the landscape. Many smaller AI operations disappeared. IBS continued through its specialization and cryopreservation expertise.
2015 to today
Specialized Service
Rather than competing on volume, IBS focuses on what makes it distinct: cryopreservation expertise, a frozen inventory spanning genetics from the 1970s to today, and the personal relationships built over decades in the industry.
